Town of Groveland Will Close Uptack Road Starting June 16 Due to Culvert Demolition

GROVELAND – Town Administrator Rebecca Oldham reports that the Uptack Road will be closed starting June 16 due to culvert demolition.

Uptack Road will be closed starting Friday, June 16, as the town prepares to begin demolition and construction on the culvert pipe that carries the road over Meadow Pond.

Detour signs and barricades will be installed during construction. The detour route can be found here

The Town received an $1 million MassWorks grant through the Small Town Road Assistance Program (STRAP) to pay for this project.

Uptack Road, which connects Washington Street with Route 133, is scheduled to reopen by Labor Day (80 calendar days), if not sooner.

“We are pleased to be able to start this project, which will greatly improve road safety and improve Groveland’s climate resilience,” Town Administrator Oldham said. “The Town wishes to thank residents for their patience while this work is ongoing.”

Embankments along the culvert are in poor condition and show signs of cracking and displacement, resulting in sink holes. Guardrails leading up to the road have deteriorated, posing an immediate threat to motorists and pedestrians.

The failing culvert pipe will be replaced by a three-sided precast concreate box culvert, which will be supported by precast concrete spread footings. The new culvert will be designed to withstand peak flooding conditions.

Additionally, new steel bridge railings will be installed that will meet modern traffic safety standards at all four approaches.

Engineering will be performed by TEC, Inc., and construction will be performed by Kodiak Corporation.
