Town of Groveland Announces Public Health Warning After Combined Sewer Overflow

The Town of Groveland announces that a Public Health Warning has been issued following a combined sewer overflow into the Merrimack River.

The cities of Lawrence, Lowell, and Haverhill all reported overflows in the early morning hours of Tuesday, July 19. These overflows can contain stormwater, untreated or partially treated human and industrial waste, toxic materials, and debris. The Lowell discharge occurred between 1:10 a.m. and 5:20 a.m.

The Health Department recommends that the public avoid contact with the Merrimack River through at least Thursday due to increased health risks from bacteria and other pollutants.

The Town draws its drinking water supply from three wells near the Merrimack, and not directly from the river. All water is tested to meet clean water standards before distribution.
