City of Newburyport and Town of Groveland to Host Joint Annual Household Hazardous Waste Day

NEWBURYPORT — Newburyport Mayor Sean R. Reardon and Groveland Town Administrator Rebecca Oldham would like to announce that the City of Newburyport, in collaboration with the towns of Groveland and West Newbury, will be holding a joint Household Hazardous Waste Day this September.

Household Hazardous Waste Day will be held Saturday, Sept. 9, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Newburyport Department of Public Services (DPS) lot, 16A Perry Way.

During the event, residents and community members can dispose of hazardous materials in a safe and environmentally friendly way.

Tradebe Environmental Services will be on-site to accept the materials. Acceptable materials include oil-based paints (paint cans that read alkyd, solvent or solvent-based, or combustible), varnishes, pesticides, pool chemicals, gasoline, and other household hazardous materials or chemicals. Municipal staff will also be collecting rechargeable batteries, including car and boat batteries, and items with mercury.

Materials that will not be accepted are commercial or industrial waste, latex paint, ammunition, asbestos, radioactive material, fire extinguishers, and medical or biological wastes.

When bringing unused or unwanted paint to Household Hazardous Waste Day, residents are reminded to pay attention to paint can labels. If the label includes words or phrases such as water-bases, latex, acrylic, vinyl, or reads clean up with soap and water, do not bring these to Household Hazardous Waste Day.

Residents are reminded to follow safe handling procedures when bringing hazardous materials to the DPS. Safe handling procedures include leaving materials in their original labeled containers, making sure lids and caps are tightened and properly fastened, placing containers in a sturdy upright box when transporting them to the site, and never mixing chemicals together.

Cost association for disposals are $30 for three gallons or pounds, $45 for up to 10 gallons or pounds, and $60 for up to 25 gallons or pounds of materials and are based on the size of the container. Cash and checks should be made out to the City of Newburyport. Credit cards will not be accepted.

Additionally, Shred Source, a Newburyport-based company, will be providing a paper shredding truck for on-site document shredding during this event. The first file-size box is free, and each additional box will be $5. Cash and checks should be made out to the City of Newburyport. Credit cards will not be accepted.

Residents are required to show proof of residence upon arrival.
